Wildlife management in captivity represents a constant and significant challenge in terms of animal welfare and personnel safety. In this specific context, operant conditioning through positive reinforcement has been firmly consolidated as an effective tool to facilitate human-animal interaction by promoting voluntary behaviors. This present study aimed to evaluate the application of a comprehensive operant conditioning program using positive reinforcement in Great Curassow (Crax rubra) specimens at a zoo located in the city of Chetumal, the capital of Quintana Roo, in southeastern Mexico. The research worked with three specific individuals—two males and one female—using a structured design divided into observation stages, behavior selection, training implementation, and response evaluation. Key behaviors for clinical and preventive management were successfully conditioned, such as approaching, perching, and desensitization to scales, syringes, and transport crates. The results showed progressive improvements in the behavioral response of the individuals, reaching favorable response percentages in most of the trained behaviors. Consequently, it is concluded that the use of positive reinforcement contributes significantly to the reduction of stress associated with management, improves the cooperation of the specimens, and strengthens overall animal welfare, positioning itself as a highly viable strategy within modern management programs in zoological institutions.
