Abstract

This study aimed to foster collaboration between students from China and Colombia through reflective and participatory activities. A qualitative methodology was employed with a case study approach, using pre- and post-project surveys and interviews to assess students' perceptions of motivation and value, self-efficacy, and interpersonal skills throughout the project. The sample included 36 Chinese students from Central China Normal University and 25 Colombian students from Universidad de la Amazonia. The results showed that Chinese students experienced a decrease in interest and perceived value of the project, along with an improvement in perceived competence and a reduction in pressure. In contrast, Colombian students demonstrated an increase in interest and perceived value while maintaining a high perception of competence and relatively stable pressure. Regarding interpersonal skills, both groups faced challenges, but Colombian students managed to maintain better performance in communication and problem-solving. It can be concluded that COIL projects must take into account the cultural and contextual differences of the participants to maximize the success of collaborative learning. Additionally, adapting to the specific needs of each group can significantly improve students’ experiences and project outcomes.
